Press Release

GemStone Systems Granted Patent for Object Queues with Concurrent Updating

Technology increases performance and decreases administration time and costs

Beaverton, Ore - April 9, 2002 - GemStone Systems, a leading provider of zero-latency performance software, today announced that it has been granted a patent by the United States Patent Office for its Object Queues with Concurrent Updating technology (No. 6,360,219).

The Object Queues with Concurrent Updating technology allows adding and removing elements from an object queue, which is a sequence of stored data awaiting processing, in a database or other shared-memory architecture by multiple users without having to lock the queue to eliminate conflicts. The advantages of not locking the queue are that it significantly increases performance, decreases administrative time and costs and it ensures that the objects in the queue are available for other transactions.

This technology benefits developers because they can easily integrate it into other applications without the burden of programming another model for allowing concurrent use, which saves them development time and enables faster time to market.

The Object Queues with Concurrent Updating technology automatically prevents conflicts that could otherwise occur when two users concurrently add and remove objects from the queue. Typically you have to lock the queue to prevent conflicts or write complex application code to avoid the conflicts, but locking the queue negatively impacts the performance.

This technology was originally developed for a GemStone customer who is a world leader in the delivery of innovative electronics manufacturing services. They required the ability to add and delete a massive number of parts quickly without conflicts, and this technology met their needs. This technology benefits other industries such as finance and insurance that also requires the instantaneous flow of data.

The patented technology is currently integrated into GemStone Facets™, a transactional Java workspace that enhances the performance of complex, distributed e-business applications.

It is also integrated with GemFire™, which is the first shared-memory technology that significantly increases performance of business applications. GemFire can be integrated with existing architectures and built into new applications without developers having to learn the intricacies of shared-memory programming.
